Smiling can lead to a relaxation response

Recent social media posts have spread fear to parents with little children who enjoy pool time during the summer months. Several cases have emerged of children choking on water and ending up in the emergency room with life-threatening symptoms.

Dr. Mike Patrick works in emergency medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He says even when there’s some coughing when they’re splashing around it likely won’t lead to anything serious. Dr. Mike says, “Over 95% of the time they’re going to be fine.”

There are symptoms to look for in those rare cases. Dr. Mike explains, “Anything related to breathing and airway would definitely make you want to take notice.”
