K-LOVE Pastor Shares Personal Struggle With Depression

Depression is common in modern times and Christians are not immune. Pastor Dave describes the condition as a hopelessness coupled with “a sense of sadness that doesn’t seem to have an end.” Pastor Bill personally suffered a time where his hopes were dim. “I was going through a job transition,” he remembers. “I was having a hard time getting off the couch.” He experienced mental and emotional symptoms. “There’s just this numbness that kinda overcomes you.”

Other signs of depression can include weight loss/gain, chronic irritability and what the Closer Look Pastors call a persistent ‘brain fog.’ They suggest that a doctor should be consulted if these conditions persist for several weeks without noticeable relief, but acknowledge the stigma of depression can cause people to avoid help.

Pastor Bill was personally comforted by the fact that some of the world’s greatest leaders dealt with depression. Citing men of faith like Charles Spurgeon, Martin Luther and King David, the Closer Look Pastors agree there’s no reason to be ashamed if you’re feeling sad and hopeless. See a doctor, involve trusted loved ones in your recovery and “cry out to the Lord,” encourages Pastor Dave. “God wants to help you through the seasons of life and whatever depression you’re in today.”
